I am a Federal Correctional Officer in the US. I find the perspectives, similarities and differences between British and US prisons very interesting. I am a retired Police Officer who still has to work, as a result I decided to work at the other end of the Justice spectrum. I have 7 years total working in prisons. Two in “Super Max” and the rest in a very relaxed, maybe too relaxed low security prison. So again, hello!
I see us being pushed into a period of being softer due to expense and a generation that has enjoyed fairly low crime. We here tend to act like a pendulum in our approach to crime. Soft to hard then back again. In the late 80s, early 90s much of the US was scared and angry over quickly rising violent crime, and took a lock them up and throw away the key approach.
This worked well for quite a while, however, now we have huge numbers of older sickly inmates that are costing taxpayers billions. I wish we had the will snd ability to asses and release many of these old, sick budget busters. Instead of limiting who goes to prison.
