Hi all, first of all thanks for approving me. My question is, will being sacked from the police prevent me from joining the prison service? I’m currently suspended for criticising the hijab on Facebook and the force is pushing for dismissal. I didn’t promote hate or incite violence, just said that it was sexist, also I don’t use my real name on social media or identity myself as a copper. I was already planning on leaving in favour of the prison service but at a time of my own choosing, unfortunately the prospect of unemployment has forced me to apply earlier. Hopefully I’ll win my hearing so it won’t matter. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Uhtred.
Yeah and the really depressing thing is that it must have been someone I considered a friend. They probably used it to help get a promotion. 12 years good service, not one complaint and a chief constable’s commendation for bravery, all for nothing.
I don’t think an employer can give a bad reference as such, even the police, but they can give an unsatisfactory one- if that makes sense. They can state they wouldn’t recommend you for re employment, which in itself is not positive. I’m not sure they can go into any detail, such as what you’ve said happened. However, as a Police officer and indeed the prison service, they have people employed on social media, monitoring its employees. The service takes respect for diversity very seriously. I guess you could do two things, firstly, try and win your appeal and keep your job, then think of resigning. Or secondly, maybe resign, hoping this will go in your favour. This may be better for them too.
