Hi everyone. I completed Rad in May and have been on the merit list. I now have a conditional offer for Holme House. I'm just a little concerned about the amount of violence I may encounter.. Ive been doing a little research and the reviews I've read from current or past prison officers aren't great for the most part. Seems that staffing problems can lead to you being left alone a lot and therefore putting yourself in potentially vulnerable situations. Being thrown in at the deep end was mentioned quite a lot. Seems like the work/home balance isn't great either, long hours and little social/family time-again probably down to stafing problems and the need to work overtime etc. Can anyone shed any light on this for me please? Would love other people's views on this especially other female officers.
Welcome to the prison service,at most jails you hit the ground running, you will find most of the staff are still in probation, yes it’s hard sometimes, yes you may feel vulnerable and yes there is violence ,personally I love the job and believe me you learn quick,i advice anyone who looks at the job and thinks non of the above is true to think again, best of luck for the future 👍
There is no requirement to work overtime, people choose to do this and can be done to suit you depending on your prison.
Violence is part and parcel of the job, you will learn how to deal with this at college but it only gives you the knowledge, your reaction to your first violent incident no one can predict, if you are used to it (have a background in any martial arts) this may help you.
Just under 80% of staff at my jail are in their probation period, a good proportion of them are female and almost all are confident in dealing with anything that faces them, the majority of prisoners will listen to a female officer over a male but their are some that don’t care.
Work life balance can be tricky, I have a 10 month old and on A shifts I don’t see him unless he is asleep, but my hours mean I only work a max of 4 days without a break then anything between 1 and 3 days off. Weekends are every other weekend so not bad that way.
You will either love this job or hate it, I’m like Huck, for me there is nothing like this job, the only days that are the same are when I am with the VP wing as they are all enhanced prisoners so do what you ask when you ask, you don’t even have to put people behind their doors, shout bang up and they all head to their cells and close up, it’s a bizarre place to work when your used to “encouraging” people to go behind their doors on a daily basis.
I was in charge of my wing on day 4 of being live as the only residential officer on that day, it’s a steep learning curve, stressful at times but worth it IMO.
It’s too bad that stupidity isn’t painful. Ignorance is one thing, but our society thrives increasingly on stupidity.
